Hi all,
I’m Viqui, from the gvSIG team, and nowadays I’m taking on a new role as community manager. Through this post I want to pass on some points of view about what do we understand as community, and which are some of the goals we want to achieve from gvSIG.
It’s a common practise in open source projects, and also in some companies, to have an area in order to make easier the community to participate and have some degree of interaction with the organization. gvSIG, from the very beginning, has encouraged the participation from users and developers in several ways, in order to put into practise one the premises of the project: the mutual collaboration. The way we understand the open source software model make us, for example, to release for free all the materials we produce (from the source code to the slides we make for our presentations) in order to have them available for the community.
But, what do we understand as community? have you thought about that? It’s a word overused nowadays…
Are we talking about users and developers that invest (be careful that I’m not saying spending nor giving!) their free time improving gvSIG? yes, of course I’m thinking of them, but not only. It’s well-known that around gvSIG exists a wide ecosystem of public administrations, companies, universities, technology institutes, teaching institutes, labs, NGOs, and so on, that use, personalize and improve gvSIG’s features. Well, our viewpoint is that all those groups of people are part of the gvSIG community, so anything that one of them do could benefit the others. Through this inclusive way of understanding the community, we are able to put into practise another premise: turn the gained knowledge into shared knowledge.
gvSIG has different types of communities, we call to some of them transversal because of their goals: interface translators (remind that gvSIG desktop is translated into 20 different languages), documentation translators, testers that give robustness and stability to the gvSIG products, developers, etc. On the other hand we have some communities where the linguistic influence is in dominance: the Spanish community (from the beginning the strongest), the Italian, the English one, and the Brazilian (the newest). And of course we are open to increase the diversity of groups, so that we will be able to make a real community from every group of people interested in any of the gvSIG’s aspects.
We know (by experience) that those groups do not appear (most of the time) spontaneously, of course. They are the result of processes that require effort and time. These processes we refer to, are for instance related to open source software migration because these initiatives help to change users’ mind to use open source tools such as gvSIG. The main actors of that processes of change are the people we really want to involve in, to rely on them the creation of new community groups and of course to keep the existing ones. This is a first goal, and then those eager will be accompanied (and I can tell you that nowadays this is happening!) by other people being able to decide, as a group, which activities and goals will be on their roadmap.

Hi Viqui,
my name is Gonçalo, and i recently have downloaded GV sig 1.9.
I have a problem to adding image files because when i click to select “files of type” the option “gvSIG image driver” does not apear.
wath can i do to get the images (maps) on the program?

Hi Gonçalo!
Are you trying to add raster images? (like orthophotos, etc), in this case, you should select “gvSIG raster driver” from the available drivers.
The driver “gvSIG image driver” was the one that appeared on old versions of gvSIG.
By the way, I suggest to you to go to the gvSIG mailing lists, where much more people can help you. At [1] you’ll find all the info needed to subscribe to the lists.

I am new to GVSIG..

Hi, I´m using GVSIG and I would like to use the geographic grid on the map in “dd mm,ddd” or “dd mm ss” format but I can only use in dd,dddd format. How can I change the formats?
Hi Jorge,
I’m afraid but you can not change those settings from the user interface.
I submitted a feature request on our trac for next versions. You can see it at [1].
Remember that you can report features as well as bugs on our public tracs. Some info in order to do that is available at [2].

Hi Kerim,
go to the gvSIG Preferences (Ventana/Preferencias menu), on the General/Idioma option you have to select English instead of Español. Then restart gvSIG.
The interface should appear in English.
By the way, I suggest to you to go to the gvSIG mailing lists, where much more people can help you. At [1] you’ll find all the info needed to subscribe to the lists.

Thank you. Wish by default it started in English (or atleast give an option at startup).. for if i do not know spanish, i cannot make the head and tail out of the menu. Thanks anyway.
I was having the same problem, I found a video that demonstrates how; save writing out a long winded explanation:
Two and a half years later it still installs as Spanish no matter what language you select, I’m usually a fan of open source software but it’s ridiculous that no-one has bothered to fix this!
I’m having trouble with 1.10. I’ve posted in the ‘bug’ section, but I haven’t got a reply yet.
The problem is when I try to create a tabel from a .csv file, the columns are not separated into fields. There is just one big field with all the values, including all the commas that are supposed separate the fields. I am stuck.
Hi Andrew! this don’t seem to be a bug :(. You should separate values (on the .csv file) by “;”. Did you do that?
This way gvSIG know how to separate values into different fields. Please, have a look at [1].

Thank you. Commas (,) are standard separators in North America, and that is how most programs here will save files if you specify .csv (comma-separated values).
Hi viqui…i’m getting into GVSIG and i found it great…i work on a GIS department on a municipality in Portugal and i’m aiming to get it all over in order to pur techinicians to work with it. I have some doubts, but the major is to know where’s the Portuguese/iberian gvSIG community hot spot to share doubts and developments??

some users have had the same problem. It seems that it’s a problem with
the language of the operative system. Do you
have the OS in English or in a variant (for example English-South
Africa….)? We’re trying to find the problem to fix it in the next
versions.
Now, to change it in gvSIG you must go to the menu: Ventana ->
Preferencias -> General -> Idioma. Then select English, and restart gvSIG.

Very great system!
I am trying to add a WFS layer and when I try to add anything that is classified as long (big integer) type in WFS is shown as longitude in the Add Layer dialog box and finally it does not render the data. Also can we edit WFS data and save in gvSIG?

Hi Rukmaj,
could you please post or send to me the url to the WFS you are trying to connect to? I think I don’t fully understand your problem.
You can save any vector data in your gvSIG View going to Layer/Export To and select the format you need.

there is no project started yet on that way, but if you are interested on that, please contact me by email in order to see which are your needs and if other gvSIG technology (for example gvSIG Mini) could solve it.

Hi there!!! I’m new using gvSIG 1.11 and I like it very much. We’re trying to change some projects we do in other GIS, but there are some processes I can’t or don’t know how to do it. For example, I can’t extend a line or cut a polygon in a paralel form from other line. It’s possible to do that??? and, where can I find information about it???

In any case, I think that you have a geoprocess (in toolbox) to join several raster layers in one layer
